A wonderful project with a delightful and amenable client, the Violet Close project was a true testament to what a difference an extension can make to a home.
This two up, two down, end-of-terrace property is situated in a pretty, secluded residential area surrounded by woodlands.
The original design included a paved area between the house and garage that was constantly in shade because of the surrounding walls. The size and lack of light made it unusable as a garden space, and so the client wanted to incorporate the area into the house in order to make full use of it.
My brief was to design the side extension to create a separate dining room. The extension was to link to the existing garage, which is going to be converted and divided into a bar area with separate storage at the front.
Working with the client; we came up with the idea of adding a mezzanine floor to gain additional floor space within the extension and to achieve a gradual step down between the house and garage, as viewed from the front.
This project was like completing a jigsaw! And the client graciously asked me to advise them with their choice of internal materials, incorporating plenty of natural light and creating airy and comfortable internal rooms.
The detailing for the construction on this project was successfully completed despite the challenges of the odd plan shape (with unequal wall lengths) and the client ended up with a beautiful new home without having to move from the place that they love!
